Many birds in Europe are threatened because of the damage we are doing to our environment, experts are warning. By Rayner Gordon A report called ‘Birds In Europe’ says 43% of the continent’s bird species are in danger because of climate change, farming methods or building projects. The species that are threatened the most are all types of sparrows. ‘Experts fear that some of the species may die out completely.’ They are afraid of the consequences: there will be none left before 2040. British bird species at risk include the house sparrow, starling and wood warbler. This report is the result of the first research about this topic in 10 years. It showed an increase in the number of threatened species, which experts described as “deeply worrying”: more and more birds are in danger of dying out. Good news But there was some good news - some of Europe’s most endangered birds are recovering thanks to conservation schemes: so not all of the birds will get lost. In short, there are reasons to worry about the birds in Europe. On the other hand, it looks like we are doing a good job trying to get our birds back on track. 59 ANIMAL WORLD - ANIMALS IN DANGER - KGT
